Google today introduced the “Indian Languages Internet Alliance (ILIA)” in India which is basically Google teaming up with news content producers in India, along with the government to ensure that Internet content in Hindi (for now) becomes easily available.
The ILIA is composed of ABP News, Amar Ujala, NDTV, Network 18, Oneindia.com,Patrika Group, Reverie Language Technologies Private Limited to name a few.
As part of this alliance, Google also launched a new website called www.hindiweb.com which essentially curates content from these websites in Hindi language, thus making it easier for users who are not proficient in English to access more content.
Google also showed off improved version of the Voice Search in Hindi as well a new, faster Hindi keyboard. The company also announced that it would be launching some 15 Hindi font families which would be open-source and work across platforms, to help bloggers, authors who chose to write in Hindi.
The highlight of this Google event was the presence of Senior Vice-President and head of Google’s Search product Amit Singhal. Google’s India Managing Director Rajan Anandan was also present at the event as was India’s Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar.
As Anandan outlined, the aim of Google’s Internet alliance is to ensure that the next crop of Indian users who come online find the Internet useful. “Currently over 200 million Indians are online and most of them are already proficient with English. We want to ensure that the next 300 million who are not proficient with English find the Internet just as easy to use,” he said. He also stressed that the next batch of Internet users would be coming via mobile-first and that the age of desktops was over, so search had to cater to such users.
He added that the alliance hopes to see 500 million Internet users from India by 2017. When asked to explain the ILIA in more detail, he said, “This is the first step. There were will various working groups as part of this alliance and each will have some specific output. The focus will be on fonts, content, accessibility, etc.” He stressed that Hindiweb.com will be a consumer entry point and that anyone can choose to be a part of this content site.
Singhal also spoke about why Google was focusing on Hindi for now and the reason for this is that it is the dominant language in India. He added that Google intends to take the Voice Search, Better keyboard, predictive text, etc., to other Indian languages as well. “We’re just getting started. Clearly all the learnings will be employed to other Indian languages as well,” he told the press.
Singhal said Google had extended Voice Search to other languages in other countries as well and it would draw on it’s experiences to ensure a better Hindi-based Internet experience for Indian users.
“What we learn from the Hindi-experience in India, will proliferate into other languages. However at this moment it’s impossible for me to give a timeline on how soon other Indian languages will get the same features,” he said.
Google’s Anandan said that the plan was to bring the features to at least the top eight Indian languages within the next 18 months, which would include Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, etc.
Earlier this year, Google Now, the voice-assistant from the company, had got an Indian accent. Now search in Hindi will gain more focus, and get better features. With mobile Internet set to grow in India, Google isn’t just aiming to ensure that the next wave of non-English speakers come online, but that they also find their online experience as easy as the English speakers do.

Last night, Google pushed out a major local search algorithm update. The update has been pushed out to U.S. English based search results and seems to have had enough of a significant update that many SEOs, webmasters and local business owners have taken noticed. The update impacts both the organic local listings within Google Map Search and Google Web Search.

The algorithm is more tied into the traditional web search ranking signals, including search features from the knowledge graph, spelling corrections and other search features. Google also said there were relevancy improvements to distance and location ranking.
Google would not tell us how much of an impact this would have on local businesses but based on the early feedback we’ve seen in the comments at Search Engine Land, as well as other local search blogs – it seems there were significant ranking changes with this update.
Mike Blumenthal reports 7-local listing packs have dropped out, many real estate related searches have dropped out, while SEO and web design local packs are back after being dropped in 2009.

As the analysis continues on yesterday’s Google local search algorithm changes — that we’re calling the Pigeon update — one thing appears to be clear: Local directory sites are getting better visibility in Google’s search results.
More specifically, it looks like Google has fixed its “Yelp problem” and is now showing Yelp pages at the top of search results when queries specifically include the word “Yelp.”
You might recall Yelp’s recent accusations that Google was manipulating its search results to show Google’s own local listings and content ahead of Yelp pages even when users specifically included “Yelp” in their searches. Yelp’s report specifically looked at the search term “gary danko yelp” (Gary Danko is a San Francisco restaurant) and showed how Google listed the restaurant’s official website first, along with several links to Google+ content such as reviews and its Google+ page.
Today, that “problem” is fixed.
The Yelp page for this restaurant shows up first when the query includes “Yelp.” Two other Yelp URLs also show up ahead of the official website.
The same thing is visible on searches for other restaurants, although sometimes it’s one Yelp URL showing up ahead of the official site. Consider these searches for three Seattle-area restaurants with “yelp” included in the query:
Not Just Yelp: Other Local Directories Boosted
It’s not just Yelp that seems to be benefitting from Google’s local algorithm update. A search this morning for “seattle restaurants” shows individual eateries up in the carousel, but the organic listings below are nothing but well-known directory-style sites like Urbanspoon, TripAdvisor, Yelp, and OpenTable. There are even lesser known directory pages from Seattle newspapers and magazines on page one. (You can click to see a larger version.)
On page two, an article from The Guardian (based in the UK) about the top 10 Seattle restaurants is showing up, as is a restaurant guide from the small (but excellent) West Seattle Blog. In fact, on that search, outside of the carousel results, an individual restaurant doesn’t appear until page three.
Similar things are happening on other search queries — but not all:
A search for “miami hotels” shows individual hotels in the carousel, followed by nothing but directory-style pages in the organic results below — URLs from Hotels.com, TripAdvisor, Expedia, Kayak and even a list of hotels from Marriott’s website. Individual hotels don’t show until page two.
A search for “chicago pizza” shows individual restaurants in both the carousel and almost completely through the first page of organic results.
Searches for “dallas dentists” show several individual practices in the organic results, but “dallas restaurants” shows nothing but directory-style pages outside of the carousel.
Overall, though, it looks like Yelp and other local directory-style sites are benefitting with higher visibility after the Pigeon update, at least in some verticals. And that seems logical since, as Google said, this update ties local results more closely to standard web ranking signals. That should benefit big directory sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor — sites that have stronger SEO signals than small, individual restaurants and hotels are likely to have. For those businesses and websites, local search has just gotten a lot more difficult.

The other issue is that you’ll have to manually select the files to transfer. This can be a convenient way to transfer documents, but be aware that transferring large files (such as home movies) over a cloud-storage service can take a long time and eat into your monthly broadband cap, if you have one.
Beyond that, free cloud services tend to offer small 5GB to 10GB storage limits, which may not be enough storage to handle all the data you want to transfer. Paying for additional cloud storage can overcome that hurdle, however. You can even piece together 50GB to 100GB of free cloud storage, if you don’t mind creating accounts with several companies and putting in a little sweat equity.
A cloud service also requires that you manually pick the files to move over. If you’re not comfortable deciding which files to transfer, you might find one of the following two automatic file-transfer applications helpful.

Click next, then click on the button marked “Yes.” This will allow you to navigate to the file you saved on your external hard drive or cloud storage folder. The Easy transfer tool will automatically transfer over documents, bookmarks, and other User data.
Option 4: Laplink PCMover Express
Microsoft is currently offering a free version of Laplink PCMover Express for users transferring from Windows XP. PCMover Express offers basically the same data- and settings-shifting functionality as the Easy Transfer Tool, but instead of storing the files to be transferred on a removable drive, it sends them directly from one computer to the other across a local network using Wi-Fi, ethernet, or USB.
